Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re a complete beginner, returning to driving after a break, or looking to improve your confidence, here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often.

I’m a complete beginner. Is that okay?

Absolutely. We provide beginner driving lessons from the very first lesson, so no previous driving experience is required.

Your first lessons will focus on the basics and we’ll gradually introduce new skills as your confidence and ability develop.

How many driving lessons will I need?

Everyone learns at a different pace, so there isn’t a set number of lessons that guarantees you’ll be ready for your driving test.

As a rough guide, a complete beginner may need around 40–50 hours of professional driving lessons, together with additional private practice where possible.

Some learners will need fewer lessons and others may need more. Your instructor will regularly assess your progress and help you understand which areas need further development.

Do you offer both manual and automatic driving lessons?

Yes. We offer manual and automatic driving lessons, allowing you to choose whichever suits you best.

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you decide based on your confidence, experience and what you want from your licence.

What areas do you cover?

We provide driving lessons across Chingford & North London.

Contact us with your postcode and we’ll let you know whether we currently have an instructor covering your area.

What is the benefit of learning in a manual car?

One of the biggest advantages of passing your driving test in a manual car is flexibility.

A full manual UK driving licence allows you to legally drive both manual and automatic cars. If you pass your test in an automatic car, your licence will only allow you to drive automatic vehicles unless you later pass a manual driving test.

Is automatic easier to learn than manual?

Many learners find automatic cars easier because there is no clutch or manual gear changing to worry about. This can allow you to concentrate more on steering, observations, road positioning and decision-making.

However, every learner is different, and choosing automatic doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need fewer lessons.

Do I have to buy a package of lessons?

No. You can start with individual lessons and decide later whether you’d like to make a bulk payment.

There’s no need to commit to a package straight away. You may prefer to take one or two lessons first, get to know your instructor and make sure you’re happy before deciding.

You can make a bulk payment whenever you like during your learning journey.

Alternatively you have the option to pay as you go.

Do you offer discounts for bulk payments?

We offer package deals for learners who choose to pay for multiple lessons in advance.

You don’t have to purchase a package when you first start. You can take one or two lessons first and choose to make a bulk payment at any point afterwards.

How long are your driving lessons?

Our standard driving lessons are 2 hours long. We find this gives learners enough time to settle into the lesson, practise a range of skills and make good progress without feeling rushed.

As we work with a number of driving instructors, shorter lesson durations may also be available with certain instructors. If you would prefer a shorter lesson, please ask when making your enquiry and we’ll check what is available in your area.

Do you offer refresher driving lessons?

Yes. Refresher lessons are suitable for full licence holders who haven’t driven for a while or simply want to rebuild their confidence.

They can also be useful if you’d like extra help with areas such as parking, roundabouts, motorway driving, busy roads or driving in unfamiliar situations.

Can I take lessons if I’ve already had lessons with another instructor?

Yes. You can change instructors or driving schools at any stage.

Your instructor will assess your current ability during your first lesson and continue from an appropriate level rather than automatically starting again from the beginning.

Can you help me prepare for my driving test?

Yes. As you approach test standard, lessons will increasingly focus on independent driving, manoeuvres, test routes and the types of situations you’re likely to encounter during your practical test.

Mock tests may also be used to help identify any areas that need improving before the real test.

When should I book my practical driving test?

It’s best to discuss this with your instructor. Driving test waiting times can be long, but booking a test too early can put unnecessary pressure on you if you’re not yet at the required standard.

Your instructor can give you an indication of your progress and whether your planned test date is realistic.

Can I use the driving school car for my driving test?

Subject to availability and your instructor being satisfied that you’re driving safely and are ready for the test, you may be able to use your instructor’s car for your practical driving test. A test day Car Hire fee applies, which includes a one hour warmup lesson before hand, giving you time to settle in, build your confidence and arrive at the test centre prepared. The fee also covers the use of the vehicle for the duration of your driving test.

Speak to your instructor in advance so arrangements can be made.

How often should I have driving lessons?

For most learners, having lessons regularly helps maintain progress and reduces the amount of time spent going over previously learned skills.

Weekly lessons are common, although the ideal frequency will depend on your availability, budget and how quickly you’d like to progress.

What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?

We understand that plans can change. We kindly ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or rearrange your lesson. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice may be charged at the full lesson rate.
